A smartphone that Xiaomi marketers despise: Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (Redmi K20 Pro)

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

Nobody humiliates Redmi’s own subsidiary as Xiaomi marketers themselves – a smartphone that was created under the name Redmi K20 Pro and which was originally supposed to show that “we can do separate mobile phones without Xiaomi, and even cheaper!” , renamed to Mi 9T Pro and sold as another (fourth) modification of the flagship Mi 9. All so that buyers get tired of looking for differences between them and run away to another manufacturer that does not have a mess with the names of flagships. And in vain, because, apart from an incomprehensible nameplate, Mi 9T Pro is one of the best smartphones of the year for a set of “fighting qualities.”

Ever since the winter of this year, news has surfaced that Xiaomi divides its mobile division into two parts: Mi and Redmi. Because with the slogan “Xiaomi is cheap” you can’t sell smartphones for 60+ thousand rubles, as Huawei already does (and successfully cuts money). And with Redmi – please, because there is always the opportunity to say “cheap – this is for you there, and here we sell unique user experience and incredible innovative solutions!”.

But to spend huge budgets on advertising in the style of “Redmi is not the underground Chinese who mow under us, but our office, only with cheaper mobile phones,” Xiaomi, for some reason, was stingy. Probably, because a considerable part of Redmi mobile phones are not very cheap – even more expensive than older phones by the name Xiaomi.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

If you can’t argue with budgeting with Redmi 7A, Redmi 7 and Redmi Note 7, the “degraded flagship” of the Redmi brand – K20 – with its 26 thousand rubles at the start turned out to be slightly more expensive than the “degraded Xiaomi flagship” – Mi 9 SE. And the Redmi K20 Pro, which will be discussed today, also climbs in front of the Old Man in the heat, because it will be more expensive than the “simple K20”. And for the “simple” version with 128 GB of memory, they ask 29 thousand rubles.

Accordingly, the K20 Pro flies “for thirty”, and this is more expensive than the full-fledged flagship Xiaomi Mi 9, which, as legend has it, the camera shoots a little better and has fast charging (in K20, they didn’t deliver any versions, because “it’s Well, Redmy, he’s not supposed to! ”

And for buyers Redmi = “no more than 20 thousand rubles.” Xiaomi understands this, so cunning marketers renamed the “Redmi flagships” to the Xiaomi flagships. And no problem!

This is about marketing. If you do not give a damn about marketing, then let’s just assume that we have a new Xiaomi model with a selfie camera leaving the case for 30+ thousand rubles. What do we get at such a price and how does it look compared to competitors?

Appearance

With the shape of the case today, you can’t especially dare, with the materials, too, because plastic and metal smartphones in the era of fashionable glass are no longer needed by anyone, so mobile phone designers come from the other side. If last year we all admired simply beautiful two-tone overflows of glass cases in the sunlight, now a strange psychedelic riot of colors, which can not be described (and poorly detected by the camera), is happening on the back of the Mi 9T Pro. What is it? What does it look like? It is incomprehensible, but it looks fresh and very cool, like some kind of chemical reaction or the illumination of some alien figovina. On the other hand, we live in a country where most buyers buy monotonous black and gray smartphones shades and wanted to spit on these your patterns. But there will be a holiday on their street – in addition to the burgundy and blue Mi 9T Pro with patterns, there will also be a glossy black “just a shovel”.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

Everything is standard in front and there are no differences from the Mi 9T. There is no front camera. She leaves the upper end of the smartphone, while still glowing in a strange blue color. The “huge” display occupies almost the entire surface of the front panel. Although who will surprise you with a 6.39-inch display? There was a small “chin” below. It does not strike the eye – and good. Let’s hope that next year manufacturers will be able to get rid of this ledge under the display completely. But even so, it looks much better than the holes in the display and all these distortions above the screens.

The volume rocker and the lock button are on the right side. The latter is located especially conveniently, it is not necessary to frantically search for it, and the finger immediately lays on it. By the way, if you thought that a wide flight of imagination from designers dried up at the stage of designing the back, then you are mistaken. The lock button is bright red. How do you like that?Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

The SIM card tray is located in a good place, which does not close with the standard complete cover – to the left of the USB Type-C port. By the way, the tray is simple – there is no slot for a memory card (only two nanoSIM cards), so you will have to be content exclusively with internal memory and cloud storage.

The gain from the “complete framelessness” and the selfie camera that moved to the upper edge of the case is actually symbolic. For example, in Xiaomi Mi 9 a screen with a diagonal of 6.39 inches, and in Mi 9T Pro a display with the same diagonal. How “frameless” Mi 9T Pro is more compact than simple Mi 9? By … 0.5 mm. Another thing is that you do not have to look like a decoration on the Indian’s forehead at the black dot in the center of the screen – this is already a plus.

Screen and Shell

Where did the fashion for high display saturation come from – hardly anyone will remember, because a lot of time has passed. And if they remember, they will poke a finger at Samsung with their AMOLED displays, which at the time of the appearance of everyone surprised precisely with the saturation of colors. But Xiaomi, it seems, decided to overfulfill all possible plans and break all existing records. And only then deal with the consequences.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

In the standard display mode, the colors on the screen of the Mi 9T Pro are bright, “hellish” and ruthlessly oversaturated – do not be too lazy to go to the system settings and switch the display to a more realistic one if you do not like such colorful cartoonishness.

Mi 9T Pro
Maximum brightness level (min./max.) 449 / 1.6 cd / m2
Contrast (more = better) undefined
Color gamut (sRGB) (90-100% – ideal, more = worse) 130%
DeltaE (less = better) 5.87
Gamma (ideal – 2.2) 2.2
Color temperature (ideal = 6500K) 7600K

With the rest of the parameters, surprisingly, everything is fine. Bright, cool display with good viewing angles.

Color rendering clarity (DeltaE) might be a little better, but that’s nitpicking. By the way, the smartphone also supports DC Dimming technology, which reduces eye strain from high-frequency flickering of the screen. Owners of Samsung can now put a mean tear.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

MIUI with each new version more and more strives for a clean and simple interface without piles. And not without pressure from the corporation of good. Even the keyboard is Google’s one. This can not but rejoice, because the system can be used immediately “out of the box”, without installing additional programs.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

The display is high-quality, but the colors are initially oversaturated – you need to go into the settings and fix.

If you had to check the firmware version before, whether it is global and so on, now there is no such need. Everything works quickly and smoothly (still it would not work smoothly on the 855 “dragon”, yeah).

Performance and autonomy

To hell with the discussion about how good and fast the new processor from Qualcomm turned out. It’s enough to just know that one of the most powerful mobile chips of this year was “stuffed” into a smartphone for 23 thousand rubles (it costs about the same in Chinese online stores). In general, for the Chinese, the Mi 9T Pro is a replacement for the F1 Pokofon. Inexpensive “combat” smartphone with the most powerful processor, only now improved on all fronts (housing, display, camera). It will be presented as a tuned version of the flagship Mi 9. Yes, I still worry that after the announcement of the price (at the time of writing the review it has not yet been announced) we will not be happy with it.

In general, if Pokofon at the time of the release was definitely the cheapest smartphone with a flagship processor (Snapdragon 845 at that time), now it turns out that a “simple” Mi 9 for 28-29 thousand will cost less than a “super-Redmi”. In the automotive world, for Skoda’s exit, which would be better than Audi, the concern’s marketers would be shot from quarterly prize jet destroyers for blurring the image of a senior brand. But in mobile phones such “jokes”, as you see, are still permissible.

In China, this smartphone is considered the cheapest with Snapdragon 855 on board. It just so happened, more prestigious Mi 9 will cost less

The test in the recently released AiTuTu Benchmark, which, you guessed it, measures the speed of artificial intelligence, the smartphone passed literally 10 seconds with a mark of 186,000 points. Almost like the other flagships of this year, including the new generation of Galaxy.

There was almost no heating during most of all tests. There was a temperature increase in the place where the processor is located, but the heat did not go beyond this area. Most of all, the smartphone looked like a stove during the AnTuTu 3D test. And 8 layers of graphite, designed to cool the smartphone, did not help.

Yes, you can notice that the smartphone is inferior in tests to the more expensive owners of Snapdragon 855 and the latest generation Exynos in the new Galaxy line, but this is never critical if you recall the price of the device.

The toughest smartphone with the flagship Snapdragon 855 processor

Four thousand milliamps turned out to be good indicators for this bunch of display and processor. Without launching games, with constantly connected Bluetooth headphones and the constant use of instant messengers, social networks and a browser, the charge lasts all day. The result is good, but what about the long-term workload?

Camera

The entire line of Mi 9 pleases with good, by the standards of Xiaomi, cameras. The main camera consists of three standard modules for 2019. One wide-angle, main 48 MP and 8-megapixel tele-module with double optical zoom. With such a good set of sensors, the lack of support for the RAW format, which allows you to record a lot of information about the frame and during post-processing photoshop the picture without losing quality, was very disappointing. Most likely, this is solved by installing additional software, but these are already some crutches. All modern flagships and sub-flagships are removed from the box in RAW. For this, a significant minus.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

And daytime scenes, and evening, and even night, are given to the camera without any problems. It takes off the smartphone very quickly, there is no noise, it is not necessary to “fix” the camera for a couple of seconds in low light conditions. Immediately after pressing the shutter button, the frame is ready.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

Shooting modes are standard and without a bunch of bells and whistles, as in the same smartphones from Huawei and Honor. Of those that are useful in everyday use, one can note “Night” and “48 megapixels.” The first takes pictures with different exposures for a couple of seconds and sticks them together in one shot to get better quality under frankly poor lighting conditions.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

The cameras are good, although at this price it can be better.

The second one simply squeezes all the juices from the main module and removes it with very cool detail, even without optostab . However, we have all seen this on the Mi 9 and Mi 9T.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

The front camera remained the same as in the Mi 9T – moving out, with a resolution of 20 megapixels and an aperture of 2.2. They could have improved the optics, otherwise what kind of “Pro” is it? If during the day it shoots decently, then in the evening the detail of the pictures is sometimes not enough and these 20 megapixels simply have nowhere to go. But what can’t you do for the sake of steep numbers in technical specifications?Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

Mi 9T Pro shoots videos with a maximum resolution of 4K 60fps. Stabilization is activated only at Full HD resolution and works, I must say, very worthy. There are no twitches and distortions of the image along the axes.Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro

Xiaomi Mi 9

If you don’t have confidence in retractable cameras and want to get the most packed flagship cheaper, buy better. Yes, autonomy will be worse than in the Mi 9T Pro with its 4000 mAh, but enough for a day, and the price-performance ratio will be better. Because, if this ratio is not important for you, why do you look towards Xiaomi at all, and do not carry a wad of money to the Apple store?

Well, if appearance is important to you, then it is worth remembering that the rear panels of smartphones are different. The hero of the review is still an amateur, and in Mi 9 the back is quite standard for 2019.

Honor 20 Pro

The top Honor is when you put the average lousy IPS screen in a smartphone for 35 thousand rubles and because of it in a mobile phone with 4000 mAh you get the autonomy of the level of phones with 3500 mAh. For what?

To smack a very cool camera (level of Huawei P20 Pro, a little worse than in the expensive P30 Pro) camera, 5x zoom without loss of quality, and 8/256 GB of memory!

Anyway, cameras in the Honor 20 Pro are better. The performance is slightly lower (in applications it is not noticeable, in games – yes, and as smartphones age, it will become more and more striking), the screen is worse. I repeat, at the time of writing the review, we do not yet know the price of Mi 9T, but even if 33,900 (64 GB) and 35,990 (128 GB) rubles are rolled out for it, Honor with its 256 GB will still be better equipped.

And these are absolutely equal smartphones in terms of steepness. The only question is what characteristics are more important to you.

Verdict

Even with all the “market economy” with prices and name, this is a good smartphone. Now there are almost no smartphones in which there would be only the most necessary – a high-quality screen, the most powerful processor (to slow down soon, and not after the next Android update), a processor, a large battery and good cameras. All this with the Mi 9T Pro.

I’ll tell you even more – this is the world’s most enduring smartphone on the flagship Snapdragon 855 processor! Rewind the article back and look at the autonomy chart – only ASUS ZenFone 6 lasts longer, but its autonomy is better by one (!) Percent, despite the fact that it has 5000 mAh and a thicker case! Samsung Galaxy S10 + also lasts a little longer, but, firstly, it has a “heretical” Exynos instead of the correct Snapdragon (fanatics in the comments tell you why this is important), and secondly, the battery itself is cooler. And the price is not an example above.

Everything! Further in the endurance top, there are only smartphones on processors “cut off” in performance. Already for this, the Mi 9T Pro needs to build a monument not made by hand! Well, or the “Editors’ Choice” award, as in our case.

The best smartphone for the combination of “processor + autonomy + display” at a reasonable price

Another thing is that if you are a maximalist and want something “very-very” in individual characteristics, and not as a whole, the Mi 9T Pro has little to offer you, except for the processor. Better autonomy? Take a look below and take the “standard” Mi 9T. The best camera up to 35 thousand rubles? Honor 20 Pro is your choice. The best screen? Samsung Galaxy S9 in the “gray” retail for 32-37 thousand rubles you have been waiting.

It is difficult to advise one thing at once for everyone. However, if you are a fan of smartphones, you will not give a damn about my advice – you have already decided on the model of your favorite mobile phone. And if for you a smartphone is not a means to gain the respect of “boys who are in the subject” and not luxury, but, so to speak, a “vehicle”, Mi 9T Pro is now one of the best all-in-one options without overpricing as prices as the flagships of Apple, Samsung and Huawei.
