Nobody humiliates Redmi’s own subsidiary as Xiaomi marketers themselves – a smartphone that was created under the name Redmi K20 Pro and which was originally supposed to show that “we can do separate mobile phones without Xiaomi, and even cheaper!” , renamed to Mi 9T Pro and sold as another (fourth) modification of the flagship Mi 9. All so that buyers get tired of looking for differences between them and run away to another manufacturer that does not have a mess with the names of flagships. And in vain, because, apart from an incomprehensible nameplate, Mi 9T Pro is one of the best smartphones of the year for a set of “fighting qualities.”
Ever since the winter of this year, news has surfaced that Xiaomi divides its mobile division into two parts: Mi and Redmi. Because with the slogan “Xiaomi is cheap” you can’t sell smartphones for 60+ thousand rubles, as Huawei already does (and successfully cuts money). And with Redmi – please, because there is always the opportunity to say “cheap – this is for you there, and here we sell unique user experience and incredible innovative solutions!”.
But to spend huge budgets on advertising in the style of “Redmi is not the underground Chinese who mow under us, but our office, only with cheaper mobile phones,” Xiaomi, for some reason, was stingy. Probably, because a considerable part of Redmi mobile phones are not very cheap – even more expensive than older phones by the name Xiaomi.
If you can’t argue with budgeting with Redmi 7A, Redmi 7 and Redmi Note 7, the “degraded flagship” of the Redmi brand – K20 – with its 26 thousand rubles at the start turned out to be slightly more expensive than the “degraded Xiaomi flagship” – Mi 9 SE. And the Redmi K20 Pro, which will be discussed today, also climbs in front of the Old Man in the heat, because it will be more expensive than the “simple K20”. And for the “simple” version with 128 GB of memory, they ask 29 thousand rubles.
Accordingly, the K20 Pro flies “for thirty”, and this is more expensive than the full-fledged flagship Xiaomi Mi 9, which, as legend has it, the camera shoots a little better and has fast charging (in K20, they didn’t deliver any versions, because “it’s Well, Redmy, he’s not supposed to! ”
And for buyers Redmi = “no more than 20 thousand rubles.” Xiaomi understands this, so cunning marketers renamed the “Redmi flagships” to the Xiaomi flagships. And no problem!
This is about marketing. If you do not give a damn about marketing, then let’s just assume that we have a new Xiaomi model with a selfie camera leaving the case for 30+ thousand rubles. What do we get at such a price and how does it look compared to competitors?

Everything is standard in front and there are no differences from the Mi 9T. There is no front camera. She leaves the upper end of the smartphone, while still glowing in a strange blue color. The “huge” display occupies almost the entire surface of the front panel. Although who will surprise you with a 6.39-inch display? There was a small “chin” below. It does not strike the eye – and good. Let’s hope that next year manufacturers will be able to get rid of this ledge under the display completely. But even so, it looks much better than the holes in the display and all these distortions above the screens.
The volume rocker and the lock button are on the right side. The latter is located especially conveniently, it is not necessary to frantically search for it, and the finger immediately lays on it. By the way, if you thought that a wide flight of imagination from designers dried up at the stage of designing the back, then you are mistaken. The lock button is bright red. How do you like that?
The SIM card tray is located in a good place, which does not close with the standard complete cover – to the left of the USB Type-C port. By the way, the tray is simple – there is no slot for a memory card (only two nanoSIM cards), so you will have to be content exclusively with internal memory and cloud storage.
The gain from the “complete framelessness” and the selfie camera that moved to the upper edge of the case is actually symbolic. For example, in Xiaomi Mi 9 a screen with a diagonal of 6.39 inches, and in Mi 9T Pro a display with the same diagonal. How “frameless” Mi 9T Pro is more compact than simple Mi 9? By … 0.5 mm. Another thing is that you do not have to look like a decoration on the Indian’s forehead at the black dot in the center of the screen – this is already a plus.
Screen and Shell
Where did the fashion for high display saturation come from – hardly anyone will remember, because a lot of time has passed. And if they remember, they will poke a finger at Samsung with their AMOLED displays, which at the time of the appearance of everyone surprised precisely with the saturation of colors. But Xiaomi, it seems, decided to overfulfill all possible plans and break all existing records. And only then deal with the consequences.
In the standard display mode, the colors on the screen of the Mi 9T Pro are bright, “hellish” and ruthlessly oversaturated – do not be too lazy to go to the system settings and switch the display to a more realistic one if you do not like such colorful cartoonishness.
|Mi 9T Pro|
|Maximum brightness level (min./max.)||449 / 1.6 cd / m2|
|Contrast (more = better)||undefined|
|Color gamut (sRGB) (90-100% – ideal, more = worse)||130%|
|DeltaE (less = better)||5.87|
|Gamma (ideal – 2.2)||2.2|
|Color temperature (ideal = 6500K)||7600K|
With the rest of the parameters, surprisingly, everything is fine. Bright, cool display with good viewing angles.
