Huawei has “refreshed” its range of smartphones with new low-end Y-line models. These are affordable smartphones that are not as functional and interesting as the company’s flagships, but just lower-priced smartphones are sold most of all by manufacturers. The editorial has already visited the new Huawei Y7 2019, which just went on sale. Let’s see what he is capable of and how interesting.
What is it?
The Huawei Y7 2019 is an affordable smartphone with a 6.26-inch IP + HD + display, 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 64-bit processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, a slot for MicroSD and two SIM cards and a dual main camera. The smartphone works on Android 8.1 Oreo OS with a proprietary shell of Huawei EMUI 8.2. They promise to upgrade to Android 9 Pie.
What makes him interesting?
Huawei Y7 2019 is equipped with a large IPS-display with a diagonal of 6.26 inches, an aspect ratio of 19: 9 and a rather modest for such size HD resolution + 1520×720. Cut under the front camera is made in the form of a drop. Inside – a budget eight-core 14-nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor at 1.8 GHz with graphics Adreno 506, the amount of RAM – 3 GB. The built-in memory is 32 GB, but you can insert two SIM cards and MicroSD at the same time into the tray. The main camera is double; it includes a 13 MP main module with f / 1.8 aperture plus an additional 2 MP module for blurring the background. Front – 8 megapixels. Before us is a state employee, so NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi and Type-C were not delivered, which is quite expected. But the battery is impressive, at 4000 mAh, you can expect a long operating time.
How does it look and assembled?
Externally, the Huawei Y7 2019 is similar to other current models of the manufacturer, including the recently visited Huawei P Smart 2019. The same rounded shapes without sharp corners, a drop-like cutout at the top of the screen and a polycarbonate body. Above the screen – the main camera, speaker, sensors and LED indicator. Already traditionally for Huawei smartphones, the shell provides the ability to hide the cutout with a solid black stripe, in case the internal esthete does not accept all these “mono-brows”
Placement of controls is standard for modern budget smartphones. On the right – the power and volume buttons, below – a speaker, a speaking microphone and a micro USB connector. On the left is a tray, and on the upper end is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a second microphone. The frame is rounded and smoothly goes into the back panel of the smartphone. The built-in memory in the smartphone is not so much by today’s standards, but the tray is not hybrid, you can insert two SIM and memory card into it.
Recently, everything is being released more and more smartphones with gradient colors (if I’m not mistaken, for the first time such an option was used in the flagship Huawei P20 line). Huawei Y7 2019 is available in two gradient versions: blue and purple, plus there is red and black. Gradient blue and black will still be available in our market. Perhaps later will bring more options. The back cover itself is plastic, rather branded, so that the case will not be superfluous.
The dual main camera is located in the upper left corner and protrudes slightly above the body. Below – LED flash and the caption AI Camera. Huawei Y7 2019 looks quite modern and well assembled. Yes, the materials used are not the highest quality, but this is a state employee, so such sacrifices are quite expected and justified.
How good is the screen?
The smartphone has a 6.26-inch IPS-screen with a 19: 9 aspect ratio and a modest resolution of 1520×720, the pixel density is approximately 269 PPI. There is a drop-shaped notch under the camera, which Huawei called quite a logical Dewdrop (dewdrop). Huawei continues its useful tradition of gluing a protective film on their smartphones. On the screen of Huawei Y7 2019, it also has it. Nice little thing. The screen itself, despite the low resolution, produces a good impression. The viewing angles are maximum, the brightness margin is visually very good, but we will check with a colorimeter. There are not so many settings as in more advanced smartphones of the company. There is brightness, time to lock, font size, vision protection (it’s a blue filter), full-screen applications,
A study of the screen with a colorimeter showed that the margin of brightness is indeed impressive: 473.777 cd / m 2 . This will be enough for a normal picture in the summer sun. The black field brightness was 0.533 cd / m 2 , and the static contrast was 889: 1. Calibration of the display was close to the reference values. There is a minimal drawback of red, the color temperature is about 7500K (with a reference 6500K), and the color error ΔE does not exceed 10. The color coverage is close to sRGB:
Comparison with other models:
|Device name||White field brightness,
cd / m 2
|Black field brightness,

|Huawei Y7 (2019)||473.777||0.533||889: 1|
|Honor play||343.62||0.481||714: 1|
|Nokia 6.1 Plus||401.813||0.44||913: 1|

|L G G7 ThinQ||457.281||0.333||1372: 1|
What about performance and autonomy?
Unlike the more expensive models of the manufacturer, the Huawei Y7 2019 was not received by Kirin, but by a solution from the Qualcomm Snapdragon budget line 400. This is the 14nm eight-core Snapdragon 450, which is close to the once very popular Snapdragon 625 processor, which at the time belonged to the middle segment. It includes eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores with a clock speed of up to 1.8 GHz and an Adreno 506 graphics accelerator. The RAM is 3 GB. Such a filling is quite enough for a budget smartphone, especially with a low screen resolution. So that the shell with applications works without problems, and you can play games. Of course, not at the maximum graphics settings, but with a quite comfortable frame rate. Plus there is a “center of games” utility with the function of acceleration of games to improve performance.
With benchmarks, it’s not that simple. We had an early sample with a specific firmware on the review, on which most synthetic tests simply did not install.
The smartphone is powered by a built-in 4000 mAh battery, charging 5V / 2A is supported. We had a smartphone without a kit, respectively, the charging time from the complete power supply unit could not be measured. Given the low resolution of the screen and a rather modest filling, the battery provides a very good battery life.
No, you should not wait for 3-4 days, but for 2 days with normal use (without indulging in a permanent connection, synchronization, social networks, conversations, web surfing, and so on), the smartphone keeps confidently. There are traditional branded power saving schemes.
Is the interface convenient?
Huawei Y7 2019 still works on Android 8.1 OS Oreo EMUI 8.2, but they promise to upgrade to 9 in the near future. The shell has repeatedly come across to us and is well known. Visually, it is, of course, redrawn, there are two types of display: desktops with all the content, or with a separate application menu. The settings menu and the curtain differ from pure Android only cosmetically. Various themes are supported:
There are several options for system navigation: standard buttons (to which you can add a fourth to open the curtain), a virtual navigation button that can be moved around the screen, one long navigation button instead of the standard buttons, and a fully gestural option. From small bonuses there are additional gestures. For example, a screenshot with three fingers or a call to the curtain with a fingerprint scanner (this chip appeared in Huawei for a long time):
How are things going with the camera?
The main camera consists of a 13 MP main module with f / 1.8 and 2 MP optics for blurring the background. Of the functional chips, there is an autorecognition of more than 500 scenes in 22 categories with the appropriate adjustment (Ai) and “night mode”, which takes 4 pictures and combines them into one. Previously, these chips were only in more expensive models. The application is simple and straightforward, with instructions where it is needed. Modes are switched by a single tap, there is a manual, portrait, blur the background, a separate HDR and augmented reality:
For a start, it is worth remembering that in front of us is a budget smartphone. Yes, every year the general level of quality of a mobile photo rises. But if during the day most smartphones are already capable of making decent photos, then in conditions of poor lighting it is still difficult.
In general, the Huawei Y7 2019 very sensibly removes, with an eye on the segment: daytime photos are of high quality, with an adequate white balance. At night – also quite real, but more difficult. Some smears and noises are present.
In the dry residue
Huawei Y7 2019 – a state employee with an eye on a youth audience that is looking for an inexpensive, modern-looking smartphone for social networks, YouTube, mail and web surfing. With these tasks, he copes without problems. And copes on one charge for quite a long time thanks to the capacious battery. The smartphone boasts the presence of separate trays for SIM-cards and a memory card, a fashionable, elongated screen with a drop-shaped notch, good color rendering and a decent margin of brightness, although the resolution is not enough with such a diagonal. Yes, unfortunately, such charms of modern smartphone construction as NFC, Type-C and dual-band Wi-Fi are not delivered. But, as practice has shown, these things are important geeks and not the potential audience of Huawei Y7 2019. The smartphone has already gone on sale in Ukraine for 5600 UAH. The geeks will definitely find a number of more advanced models for this money, but the smartphone will quite go down to the target audience.
5 reasons to buy Huawei Y7 2019:
- modern appearance and decent build;
- large stock of brightness and high-quality screen calibration;
- separate trays for SIM-cards and MicroSD;
- long battery life;
- good camera (in its price segment).
3 reasons not to buy Huawei Y7 2019:
- low screen resolution;
- modest performance;
- In this price range, there are competitors with more powerful stuffing.
